This program explores the confrontation between the orchestra as
a group and the piano as a solo instrument.
This program, featuring Italy's Antonio Pompa-Baldi, explores
the confrontation between the orchestra as a group and the piano as
a solo instrument. Who decides when they disagree on issues such as
tempo, dynamics and phrasing? How does each keep its individuality,
yet complement the other? Conlon shows, through examples of the
fiery Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3, how the collective
personality is surrendered to the musical composition. Through
losing a sense of self, each participant actually gains a sense of
self. The more individual ego is surrendered to the essence of the
music, the more soloist, conductor and orchestra inherit the
strength and power of the composition.
