What is the chemistry among conductor, soloist and
orchestra?
In this episode, featuring Ukrainian pianist Oleksiy Koltakov,
the concerto is seen as a conversation among soloist, conductor and
orchestra. James Conlon shows the relationship connecting these
three elements - how they play against each other, how they play
with each other - the constant interchange that is the basic
dynamic of the concerto. Excerpts from the Beethoven Piano Concerto
No. 2 are used to illustrate Conlon's analogy to the Periodic Table
in chemistry. He says that some elements combine, some don't, some
are inert and some cause explosions when combined! All the elements
combine in different ways, as in the concerto. What is the
chemistry among conductor, soloist and orchestra?
