Boston Pops laureate conductor John Williams continues his
tradition of saluting film music giants by showcasing unique
collaborations between directors and composers. The program kicks
off with a special tribute to Bernard Herrmann, whose scores for
Alfred Hitchcock films Psycho and Vertigo
thrilled and scared an entire generation of moviegoers, while
heavily influencing future film composers, including Maestro
Williams himself. Then special guests - the legendary Julie Andrews
and Academy Award-winner Blake Edwards - join Williams to pay
tribute to another distinguished film scorer, their longtime friend
and colleague, Henry Mancini. Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell (
Ragtime, Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha)
is on hand to perform "Whistling Away the Dark" from Darling
Lili, "The Days of Wine and Roses" and other enduring Mancini
classics. Mancini's daughter Monica Mancini, herself a celebrated
singer, joins Mitchell to perform "Moon River." Maestro Williams
and the Pops also accompany montages from Psycho, in
addition to a montage of other Alfred Hitchcock/Bernard Herrmann
films and Henry Mancini/Blake Edwards films.
