*Juarez, Mexico: The War Next Door - As Mexico's President
Felipe Calderón Hinojosa meets with President Obama in
Washington, DC, this week to discuss U.S./Mexican policies, there
is a war happening on the U.S/Mexican border. More than 22,700
people have been killed in Mexican drug violence since December
2006, more than the highest estimates of military and civilian
deaths in the entire Afghanistan war. NEED TO KNOW explores the
problem from the viewpoint of the victims of the violence, the
community leaders and lawyers trying to find political solutions,
youth who are at the center of the issues and the U.S. government
agencies that are policing the border.
*Guest Interview on U.S./Mexico Relations - Jon Meacham
interviews Stephen Handelman, managing editor at Americas Quarterly
magazine about America's policy and role in the Mexican drug
situation.
*Exclusive: Joe Sullivan interview - This week, the Supreme Court
handed down the decision that ruled life without parole for
juveniles who have not committed murder is cruel and unusual
punishment, and therefore unconstitutional. This decision is in
part based on scientific evidence that concluded that adolescent
brains are undeveloped and qualitatively different from adult
brains, which have developed the capacity for moral judgment. NEED
TO KNOW traveled to Florida to interview Joe Sullivan, one of the
plaintiffs in the case, for his reaction.
*Hate Speech - In the wake of this week's news of an Alabama
teacher questioned by the Secret Service after using the
hypothetical assassination of President Barack Obama as a way to
teach angles to his geometry students, Jon Meacham explores the
danger that lurks when hateful political rhetoric becomes violent
political action.
*California Medical Marijuana Clinics - California was the first
state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. Now, medical marijuana
clinics are more prevalent in cities such as Los Angeles than
Starbucks. This November, Californians will vote on an initiative
that would legalize the use of medical marijuana for any citizen
over 21. Need to Know takes a look at the social and economic
impact of medical marijuana clinics and how other states are
looking to regulate the drug.
*Karr on Culture - After Tuesday's election results, the
fundamental mechanism of the process is back in the news. Nearly 10
years after hanging chads and butterfly ballots decided the
presidential election, the way we vote still hasn't changed.
Correspondent Rick Karr takes a look at America's voting
machines.
*Next Week's News - Satirist Andy Borowitz gives his
perspective on the news of the future.
