This one-hour NOW features the soldiers of the Third
Infantry Division, many of whom have been deployed an unprecedented
third time to the battlefields of Iraq.
NOW was with the soldiers as they experienced truncated combat
training in Ft. Stewart, Georgia, and then were shipped out to
Iraq. They are stationed in the area called the Sunni Triangle,
which includes Fallujah and Ramadi.
The program follows the soldiers as they attempt to carry out
the new policy of "clear, hold, build"in towns and villages across
the province of Anbar. It's a tall order. Three years ago, Fallujah
had been the scene for some of the bloodiest fighting of the Iraq
War, when Marine units attempted to take the city after the killing
of four civilian contractors. Now, the U.S. Army has formed an
uneasy partnership with Sunni tribal leaders, who had previously
been fighting the Americans. They're allied against Al Qaeda
insurgents, but can it be successful?
The coverage also includes an intimate look the lives of
the soldiers'families. NOW spent time with these soldiers and their
families in the final weeks before they left behind newborn babies,
young children, fiancées and wives and checks in as
newborns become toddlers and as birthdays and anniversaries come -
and go.
"I think my biggest hope for this next year is just for it to go
quickly and smoothly. I don't want anything major to happen to any
of my guys or the rest of the squad or platoon,"soldier Michael
Murphy tells NOW. "My biggest concern is just to make it home with
ten fingers and toes."
