This first television series to present an environmental history of an American region recounts the compelling story of how landscape shapes human cultures and, in turn, how humans shape the land - the interaction of natural history and human history. Four programs examine the history of the area from its geological beginnings until the present. The central character of the series is the Appalachian Mountain region itself.
